Khmer Rouge Survivors Unhappy with Duch Sentence

Kaing-Guek-Eav4152-223x300Over 14 000 people were killed in a Cambodian torture prison ran by Kaing Guek Eav aka Duch during the time of the Khmer Rouge regime. He was found guilty on Monday and was given a sentence of 35 years which would be reduced to 19 years. The judge who sentenced Duch gave the reason for the jail time cut as being that Duch already served 11 years in jail and was illegally held before the United Nations.

This sentence has made many shamed in faithless in the crimes tribunal. Chairwoman for the Center for Justice and Reconciliation, Theary Seng called the ruling of Duch as scandalous after she had seen that no justice had been done for the man responsible for the murder of her 2 parents.Send also stated that this sentence was a insult to all survivors and instead Duch should have been given several life sentences.

The S-21 prison which Duch ran had only about 12 survivors who were found by the Vietnamese who invaded Cambodia in the late 1970’s. One of those survivors, Bou Meng said that after the verdict was made he was sweating heavily in the air conditioning because of being so angry. The judge gave his reasons for lowering the sentence and said that Duch besides serving time admitted his crimes and begged for forgiveness. It is clear to see that the sentence does not justify the war crimes committed and the lives taken by Duch.
